Baptism of Our Lord

10:00 AM Service January 9, 2022

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

Ringing of the Bell

(Please Stand)

Thanksgiving for Baptism

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight.

Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all.

We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life:

For the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee;

For the Guadalupe River and Canyon Lake;

For oceans and clouds, and rain showers that renew the land;

You satisfy the thirst of all your creatures and cause the earth to produce abun-dantly.

Giving thanks for baptism, the water and your Word,

we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love.

To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Hymn # 442 “All Who Believe and Are Baptized”

1. All who believe and are baptized shall see the Lord’s salvation; baptized into the death of Christ they are a new creation; through Christ’s redemption they will stand among the glorious heavenly band of every tribe and nation.

2. With one accord, O God, we pray, grant us your Holy Spirit; help us in our infirmity through Jesus’ blood and merit; grant us to grow in grace each day by holy baptism, that we may eternal life inherit.

L: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of

the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C: And also with you.

L: Let us pray:

All: Almighty God, you anointed Jesus at his baptism with the Holy Spirit and revealed him as your beloved Son. Keep all who are born of water and the Spirit faithful in your service, that we may rejoice to be called children of God, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

God’s only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

He is seated at the right hand of the Father,

And he will come to judge the living and the dead.

P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give us new birth, cleanse us from sin, and raise us to eternal life. Amen.

1. This is the Spirit’s entry now; the water and the word, the cross of Jesus on your brow, the seal both felt and heard.

2. This miracle of life reborn comes from the Lord of breath; the sinless one from life was torn; our life come through his death.

3. Let water be the sacred sign that we must die each day to rise again by his design as followers of his way.

4. Renewing Spirit, hear our praise for your baptismal power that washes us through all our days. Come, cleanse again this hour.

The Prayers

L: . . .Lord, in your mercy,

C: Hear our prayer.

Offering Prayer

Let us pray.

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you; and then use us, we pray, as you will, but always to your glory and the welfare of your people, through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Hymn #305 “When Jesus Came to Jordan”

1. When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John, he did not come for pardon but as the Sinless One. He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins, to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins.

2. He came to share temptations, our utmost woe and loss, for us and our salvation to die upon the cross. So when the dove descended on him, the Son of Man, the hidden years had ended, the age of grace began

3. Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make; this very day invade us and every bondage break. Come, give our lives directions, the gift we covet most; to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost.

L: Go in peace. Serve the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.
